As if SXSW, the film festival currently taking place in Austin, TX, didn’t have enough cinematic treats to make you want to relocate, they’re now host to the 4K premiere of THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE! Tobe Hooper’s seminal horror celebrates its’ 40th anniversary this year, and current rightsholder Dark Sky Films have been hard at work in mastering the film in 4K for a theatrical re-release this summer. Dark Sky previously issued a pristine and special features stacked Blu-ray release a couple of years back, but I think it’s safe to assume another edition will be released now that 4K ready television sets are being aggressively rolled out. Exact screening dates of where you can see the re-release in theaters is sure to be revealed soon.
Head on over to Entertainment Weekly for details on the restoration, and an interview with Hooper himself!

Synopsis:
In 1974, writer-producer-director Tobe Hooper unleashed this dark, visionary tale about a group of five young friends who face a nightmare of torment at the hands of a depraved Texas clan. Today it remains unequaled as a landmark of outlaw filmmaking and unparalleled in its impact as perhaps the most frightening motion picture ever made. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of this beloved horror classic, MPI Media Group presents the original film restored from an all-new 4k scan authorized by director Tobe Hooper and featuring a dynamic new 7.1 surround sound mix.
